Artistry Skin Care
Your skin is probably the most accurate barometer of what's going on inside of you. That means that unless all of your systems are "go," your complexion will not look its very best! The good news is, if you take good care of yourself, physically and emotionally, your skin will look as robust and healthy as you feel.
Your skin is your body's largest organ, and one of the most hardworking. It is comprised of 20 square feet in most adults and weighs anywhere from six to ten pounds. It's washable, stretchable, tough and waterproof.

At Artistry Skin Care, we back our products with the best science in the world. Among our top advisors are internationally renowned dermatologists, surgeons and researchers. Many are highly accomplished specialists in key areas like acne treatment, photo-aging or sun damage. Without exception, every Artistry advisor is a leader in the field of skin science. All of our researchers are dedicated to understanding every aspect of the skin, especially how it ages, why it ages, and what it needs to protect and repair itself.
Natural skin care is the care of the skin (the largest organ of the body) using naturally-derived ingredients (such as herbs, roots, essential oils and flowers) combined with naturally occurring carrier agents, preservatives, surfactants, humectants and emulsifiers (everything from natural soap to oils to pure water). The classic definition of natural skin care is based on using botanically sourced ingredients currently existing in or formed by nature, without the use of synthetic chemicals, and manufactured in such a way to preserve the integrity of the ingredient. As a result of this definition, many people who use natural skin care products, generally make their own products at home from naturally occurring ingredients. While there are many wife's tales surrounding the beneifts of certain ingredients, scientific studies have proven that such ingredients as Chamomile have demonstrated healing and anti-inflammatory properties when applied topically. Many people use natural skin care recipes to make remedies to care for their skin at home. Many spas and skin care salons now focus on using more naturally derived skin care products. Several companies have started to make completely natural products available to the general public.

Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me
by Paula Begoun
Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. The majority of the book--and that's nearly 800 pages--is devoted to reviews of thousands of cosmetics, from cleansers, foundations, alpha-hydroxy acids, and moisturizers to lip liners, eye shadows, and concealers, all of which Begoun has personally tested. (There are no hair care products listed, as that warrants another book entirely: Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me.)
Paula Begoun's mission is to educate women on the facts that the $45 billion cosmetics industry doesn't want people to know. In her makeup and skincare bible, she deciphers ingredient lists, translates cosmetics-counter beauty babble, and evaluates the worth of virtually every product on the market.

It should be noted that not only is Begoun a fine consumer advocate, she's also a self-esteem advocate: she mentions time and again that even the best cosmetics won't necessarily improve your life, and that's a point well taken.
Publisher: Beginning Press; 6th edition (January 2003)
Product Dimensions: 9 x 6.1 x 2.5 inches
Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics--$45 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Now in its fourth edition, Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyer beware.
